In this scenario, the discussion on adequate food providing not only energy and essential nutrients, but also non-nutrient constituents arises. When gathering these constituents, beneficial physiological effects are identified, such as the prevention or retardation of conditions, as cardiovascular disease, cancer, intestinal infections, and obesity, among others [2,3]. Thus, foods with beneficial properties are called functional, nutraceuticals, planned foods, and other related synonyms [2].
